During the summer of 2004 I made portraits of older women living in diverse settings. They had fabulous faces, hands and stories to tell.
My project took me to sixty-five wise nuns living in a retirement home in Albany. Another woman allowed me to travel to her childhood home in the Catskills and retrace her incredible history through pictures. I made regular visits to a local nursing home to photograph and get to know fine people who were grateful for the time spent with them. Two kind and brilliant women in Maine shared their love of nature and life.
I gave these willing models an ear, my time and prints for them to cherish. I came away with more than I gave. Some of these women have since died and I feel privileged to have had the experience of making their portraits.
